Here's the Latest: CBT & RDCK Community Initiatives Grant Enables Salmo FM Emergency Broadcasting Capability CFAD 92.1 has recently acquired a diesel generator which will move us closer to emergency broadcast capability during periods of power outage. Once this generator is installed along with a UPS for short term power outages, your community radio station will be able to continue broadcasting and keep you informed on up to the minute emergency information. We would once again like to thank the Columbia Basin Trust, the Regional District, as well as the citizens of Salmo and Ymir for making these funds available. We will keep you posted on the progress of this project as it unfolds. May 26, 2009
Community Radio in Salmo
Gets Financial Boost from
Community Radio Fund of
Salmo, FM in Salmo, was recently awarded $4,700.00 by the Community Radio Fund of Canada (CRFC). CFAD was among
19 campus and
community radio stations to receive funding out of 54
applicants.
“The funds will be put towards the production of a local news/public affairs forum which we hope will become a permanent fixture in our broadcast schedule, thereby improving the sustainability of radio in this community”, said volunteer station manager Gerald Hutchman. “The award of this grant is a tremendous shot in the arm for us. We are very pleased and really want to thank the CRFC and Astral Media for making these funds available to us. Sustainability of a radio station in a community of 1,200 can be a bit challenging and this kind of support really helps. In fact, we have been overwhelmed with the sense of ‘community’ that exists among campus and community radio
stations in
the ground.
It is refreshing to be a part of such a wonderful bunch
of folks”.
summer of 2008. Currently the station operates with a 100% volunteer staff of around 30. For more information about the station, visit their website at www.salmofm.info April 9, 2009 THANK YOU SALMO! You have spoken and we are grateful for your continued support. Thanks to great voter turnout for Community Initiatives Night, the RDCK and the generosity of the Columbia Basin Trust, we were able to secure a great start toward acquiring the needed equipment for emergency broadcasting. We will continue to work on this project until it is complete and we are prepared to continue our broadcast service to the community in times of emergency and power outages. We also congratulate all the other worthwhile causes in the community on securing funding. Let us know how we can help in the success of your projects. Click here to see the official results. Thanks again everyone for your support of community radio in Salmo! March 31, 2009 We need your support! On Wednesday, April 8th Area G and the Village of Salmo will be hosting Community Initiatives Night. The Columbia Basin Trust provides funds to support various community projects. Attendees will each be given five "dots" to vote on projects they would like to support. The allotted funds will then be distributed between the projects based on how many "dots" they receive. CFAD will once again be asking for the community's support to receive funding for what we believe is a very important project. Your community radio station's ability to broadcast during power outages is non-existent. When the power grid goes down, so goes our broadcast signal. We believe it is critically important for us to continue with uninterrupted broadcasts during these times of emergency so the community has a reliable source of information flow. We are requesting funding to purchase a power backup system that will enable us to continue broadcasting in these times of emergency providing the communities of Salmo & Ymir with the important information needed for the safety and security of all. Please plan now to come out and support us Wednesday, April 8th @ 7:00 PM at the Salmo Valley Youth & Community Centre. It won't cost you anything but your time. Thank you. March 10, 2009 - We Are Streaming! As of today, you can now listen to CFAD 92.1 FM on the internet! This means our little community radio station can now be heard round the world! March 6, 2009 - Salmo Elementary School Visit Today we were privileged to receive a visit to our studios by 20 students from Salmo Elementary School. The students took a tour of the studio and recorded a Station ID spot that they were able to listen to "on the air" while in studio. The CFAD staff encouraged the students to begin to think about producing their own radio program. We want to thank the students for coming and sharing their "on-air" talents with us! February 28, 2009 - Salmo FM Radio Society A.G.M. Our Annual General Meeting was held Saturday February 28th @ 4:00 PM. It was standing room only here in the studio! We had a great turn out and are excited to report we now have a full board of directors and several new local radio programs in the works with the addition of new programmers. We want to welcome to our board five new members; John Helgren, Cheryl Linkletter, Larry McKone, Al Millard and Natalie Raiche. Thank you folks for being willing to help make community radio in Salmo a GROWING concern! February 2, 2009 - We're Back! We are back on the air! That's right, we're moving. An agreement has been reached with the Salmo Chamber of Commerce and the Village to relocate our studio to the old information booth out on highway 3, right next to the Ram. This new space will help us better serve the community by providing better public access. In addition, we have agreed to facilitate an information outlet as well providing travelers and tourists with info on local attractions and services. November 13, 2008 CFAD is pleased to announce the addition of Deconstructing Dinner to our broadcast schedule. The program assists listeners in making more educated choices when purchasing food either for the kitchen or at restaurants.
Deconstructing Dinner is broadcast on 30
radio stations across Canada and also appears on
over a dozen stations around the world. Host:
John Steinman
October 19, 2008 "A Positive Note" aired it's inaugural show this evening from 7:00 - 9:00 PM. The program, hosted by Pastor Gerald Hutchman (Pastor Hutch) highlighted Canadian Christian music artists and some interesting conversation about the Christian faith. The show will begin airing every Sunday evening from 7:00 - 9:00 beginning November 2, 2008. CFAD 92.1 invites you to help support your community station by submitting your idea here for a radio program and through sponsorships. October 11, 2008 ON AIR TODAY! This is it Salmo. Your community radio station will begin broadcasting at 4:30 this afternoon! Tune your radio to 92.1FM! We really need your input. Please click on the 'Submit Idea' button and let us know what you want to hear on our radio station. Do it today! October 3, 2008 We are currently in the process of installing a computer system that will enable us to broadcast around the clock. We have determined it would be best to go on-air once that system is installed and tested so broadcasting will be uninterrupted. Stay tuned! September 25, 2008 That's It! We have completed the final requirement. Industry Canada has given us the go ahead to begin broadcasting! Over the next several days we will be intermittently on/off the air as we make some final tests and adjustments. Keep checking back for our official ON-AIR announcement and celebration. Stay Tuned! July 31, 2008 - We're APPROVED!
Well Salmo, it’s been a long haul, but on July 31, 2008 the CRTC issued its official approval for a 3 year license to operate a very low power developmental community FM radio station. You can view that decision on-line at http://www.crtc.gc.ca/archive/ENG/Decisions/2008/db2008-155.htm. Since then, we have also received FCC approval from
the
What Now?
On September 24th, an Industry Canada engineer will be in Salmo to verify that our transmitter is operating at our licensed power rating and to insure our transmission signal is not creating any unacceptable interference with aeronautical NAV/COM services. Once that has been confirmed, we may begin broadcasting immediately. We do not anticipate any problems with this verification process. That means we will be free to begin broadcasting that day! In addition, we hope to move our administration
office and production/training booth into the old Salmo information
building out on the Highway but we need to generate some recurring
revenue in order to make that a reality.
(By the way, thanks everyone
who voted for us to receive the Community Initiative Funding given by
the Columbia Basin Trust back in May which moved us much closer to
obtaining everything we need for this new production/training booth).
In the meantime, we will continue to operate out of our current
location
We recognize that many of you have been in a “wait
and see’ posture with regard to this endeavor and we want you to know,
the “wait and see” is about to become a “Yes Sireeee”!
We would like to thank everyone who has sponsored our efforts
to this point and assure you that once we begin broadcasting you will
receive a great big thank you ON THE AIR!
Also as a reminder…
Salmo FM
...stay tuned for further developments! |
